The Beauty of the Beast

These are the times that try men's souls.
-Thomas Paine

From the perspective of a parent, the above quote would reference any crisis that involves our precious children. Early this past Monday morning, we had a decision to make. While the rest of the world slumbered that cold morning, we knew our Emily was not right.

A middle-of-the-night conversation with the pediatrician confirmed what I already knew, get to the ER. I thank God for giving me the strength to remain completely calm and in control of my emotions. That is just the first of the many beauties we would see through this experience. I knew Rob should remain home with Hannah and so, my parents graciously drove down to me and helped me get Emily to the hospital. I prayed the path would be made clear and that there would be no obstacles. Except for an occasional red light, we got there quickly and were able to proceed straight to triage. Emily was having a hard time remaining upright, so this was a blessing.

I figured they would give her a bag or two of fluid and we would be on our way. Unfortunately or fortunately, however one would view it, she was pretty sick and so they admitted her readily. As the skilled doctors and nurses (shout out to all of you in the medical field, I could not do what you do and I am so thankful for all of you) worked to ensure exactly what was happening in Emily's little body, I was grateful for their thoroughness, but alarmed at some of the tests they were doing. I am happy to say that the tests did not show any of the worst case scenerios. Praise God! We are hopeful that it was a not-so-garden-variety stomach virus. She is still trying to get back to normal, but each day we see more and more of our girl.

The virus, some sort of beast. But the encouragement, prayer and support, a beauty like none other. My dear friend Sharon said how amazing it is to watch the body of Christ in action. Arms...legs...feet...ears...eyes, every single part of the body of Christ in action. Yes, indeed. Meals were left on our doorstep, cards flooded our mailbox, emails came in, phone calls and messages checking on our perky redhead. Emily's teacher and two friends stopped one morning to encourage her. They brought an envelope filled with her classmates well wishes; Emily said she will keep them forever.

Emily learned of how her whole school was praying for her. My Gather & Grow Girls kept in touch, reaching out and praying for our family (thank you, Sharon for everything). And our bloggy friends...thank you for your concern, your prayers and for following up, it has meant so much to us. Emily's friend Gabrielle sent her a chipmunk in the hospital, Emily slept wrapped around that little chipmunk and has not let him out of her sight yet.

There are those moments in life, the ones where we feel we do not fit in. The ones where we question ourselves, our purpose, our existence. Though I never want to tangle with this beast again, I am thankful for the truths it revealed for a very important six year old (and her mommy). We got to be part of that bright shining moment where confirmation is firm that we are loved, we are special. We got to see that when uncertainty strikes, we really do turn to our Master Healer and most trusted friend. And He is there and remains by our side entrusting His angels to be His body.

"For I am the Lord, Your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you." Isaiah 41:13

Emily did not make it back to school to celebrate the Thanksgiving Feast, however, I was in charge of a craft, so I kept one of every supply and Emily put together Our Little Bird Friend (who also doubles as a bread basket)

Tonight...I think the sparkle might be returning to those baby blues...what do you think?

Say a Little Prayer...

Emily has been very sick. If you feel led to, please pray for our sweetheart. Thank you so much.

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Little Bo Peep Has Lost Her Sheep

...And can't tell where to find them;
Leave them alone, and they'll come home,
And bring their tails behind them.

This goes down as one of the best Halloweens ever, for us. Both girls thoroughly enjoyed running house to house. We covered a lot of ground and Hannah never tired or waivered, though her bag did become quite heavy and she requested assistance;)

Emily originally wanted to be a slice of pizza, which I was all too ready to take on the challenge of creating. However, Hannah was rifling through Em's closet one afternoon and happened upon the lambie costume. My mother fashioned this little ditty after Emily's favorite lambie she carried everywhere as a baby. Our dear friend Leanna gave Emily that lambie and to this day, Emily will not part with it. Anyway, Hannah discovered it...she said very emphatically, "Hannah can be a lambie - BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA." Once we saw that it fit her perfectly, Emily changed her mind and figured being the boss, you know crook and all, seemed like a sweeter deal than dough and cheese:)

Thankful Thursday

"The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you." Numbers 6:24-25

This day I am thankful for

Gerry (Aunt Gerry for us:), caring for all those wonderful children

The staff at Emily's school...from finding lost hats, to praying with students, to solving student conflict and escorting each child to their parent at the end of the day, these people love the Lord and love the children. Many of them are parents themselves and as I watched them during this week's storms and winds, outside, putting others' needs before their own, I thought about how grateful I am for each and every one of them. Their devotion and dedication does not go unnoticed. Thank you CCA staff for the blessing you are to our families.

For continued work for my husband. In these uncertain times, each new job that comes in assures us of food on our table and the mortgage being paid. There are no words to express the peace that comes from knowing there will be a next job and a next after that.

Prayer and the friendships that go along with it. A good friend just had surgery, another had a baby, another is battling pancreatic cancer and yet another is rejoicing a meeting that went extraordinarily well. I have a friend that is contemplating another adoption and one who just confirmed they will be adopting a third child. Sometimes, my words and actions are insignificant, yet, in prayer, God can do big things and I can be a part of that. I like knowing that we support one another, and feel comforted that I have friendships flourishing because they are covered in prayer. For this unity, I am thankful.

Here, in the world o' blog, it is customary to pass along nominations for favorite blogs, folks that make us smile, cause us to think or just rock us with their daily "stuff". In the past six weeks, I have been nominated for several bloggy awards and I want to say I am thankful. I have posted icons on the sidebar of the nominations our blog has received. I have not passed them along (which I know is against the rules) but I would be hard pressed to find the blogs that have not been nominated already or limit it to five or six friends. So, many, many thanks to those of you who follow and keep in touch. We are so grateful to you and these "feel the love" awards, help me to be encouraged to leave our blog public and to post more often.

Wednesdays are tough days. Emily is on the go from morning til night. The one thing about Wednesdays that we love is that it is the night I have a "date night" with her. After dance, we eat dinner together and then I take her to Awana. The trip to eat and then the trip to the church and back home give us lots of time to chat. I love this time. Last night, it was late, she had lost her hat three times during the day, which apparently upset her and she forgot to take extra shoes to change into, so I knew her little mind was tired. As we pulled into the driveway, an ambulance whizzed past us and this little sweetheart says, "Mom, I really want to pray for the person in the ambulance and their family." (snivel) So, without boring you with the details of what my heart felt at that moment, I must admit how thankful I am for this child's heart.

Selfishly, I am thankful for the time I get to spend with our little sparkplug. When Emily was little and it was just she and I during the days, I was grateful beyond measure for that time. Sure, I cleaned the house and organized our lives, tasks I still have, in addition to working part time, but the moments, the everyday moments continue to bless me (and hopefully them). So, I am thankful for Hannah...for her funny little ways and for all the times she has said "Hold me, Mommy." and I can. I am thankful.
